Downtown Daily Bread (DDB)
is an Emergency Kitchen which provides a
nourishing, hot meal for the poor and homeless of downtown
Harrisburg. This is done at no cost to the recipient. The simple but
nutritious food is served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Hospitality
House of the Boyd Memorial Building of the Pine Street Presbyterian
Church in downtown Harrisburg. Lunch is served daily, including
weekends and holidays.
The concept was developed by Pine Street
Presbyterian Church in March of 1983 out of concern for local hunger
needs. In June of 1997, DDB served its 500,000th meal! Approximately
30,000 individuals eat at Downtown Daily Bread per year, an average
of 85 per day. Those served are of mixed racial background and age.
They are male and female; children and adults; employed,
unemployed, and unemployable; homeless, and those with substandard
housing; single and unwed mothers. What they share is a need for a
nourishing meal given in a warm, supporting environment.
DDB is sponsored by 12 participating
churches which provide volunteers and funds to operate the program.
There is a full time and part time cook ,and part time administrator.
Food is provided by various organizations, including USDA and the
South Central PA Food Bank. Funding is provided by private
individuals, churches, and area businesses.
Anyone interested in becoming involved
with Downtown Daily Bread is urged to contact the Director at 310 N.
Third Street, Harrisburg, or to call 717-238-4717.
