CHECK THIS OUT:

IN CASE OF SNOW we ask that you check Channel 21 or Channel 27 for cancellations or revised schedules, particularly on Sunday mornings.  The webpage will be updated to reflect the schedule for the day no later than 6:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.  Sometimes it is impossible to make a call before that time depending on city snow removal.  On weekdays, the church office and all activities are cancelled if the Harrisburg Schools are closed.  If there is a two hour delay, the office reflects this fact.  We are considering other ways to communicate emergency situations.  If you have any ideas, please share them with the staff.

Anyone who hasn’t received their PSL electronically and wishes to do so, please e-mail your request to psl@pinestreet.org.

THE LENTEN NOONHOUR RECITALS  continue this Wednesday  at 12:10 p.m.  Nicholas Basehore, Organist-Choirmaster of the Cathedral of St. Patrick (R.C.) will present the recital.  The concert is followed by a Bread and Soup lunch prepared by Downtown Daily Bread.  The cost of the lunch is $3.00 and all proceeds go to the ministry of DDB.  Come feed your soul and your body!

ANNUAL DOWNTOWN DAILY BREAD BENEFIT CONCERT will take place on Friday evening, March 19 at 7:30 p.m.  Pianist, Anne Guenin will present the first half of the program and the Chamber Singers will do the honors for the second half with music of John Rutter … best known for his Christmas Carols, but equally at home with other materials … in this case, great poetry of England in two sets.  The first is called Fancies, and deals with love poetry.  The second is called When Icicles Hang and is all about winter.  The free-will offering goes to benefit Downtown Daily Bread and its ministry of care in our community. Come and enjoy great music by our own Pine Street musicians, and support mission right in our own back yard!

THE SILENT AUCTION to support the high school youth mission trip to Chicago is now accepting the donation of items, goods and services. The auction will be held on May 1st and your donation will help to raise money to offset the cost of sending our youth to Chicago so that they can serve the poor and poverty stricken of the inner city. If you have something you wish to donate, please find a high school youth or contact Sue Black.

THE YOUTH BELL CHOIR will meet this Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Good friendship and fellowship!

THE WOMEN’S RETREAT is on the church calendar for March 12 though 14 at Camp Hebron. Is it on your calendar yet?  We have limited space left so please be sure to sign up before January 31!  Please make sure, if you have not done so already, to have your payment to the church by that date.  Our speaker this year is Rev. Ellen Crawford-True who is a native of Nashville, Tennessee. You may find her complete biography at the Welcome Center or by clicking HERE.

PINE STREET BOOMERS!  Anyone interested in helping to establish the Pine Street Boomers, with members in the Baby Boomer age group (and we know who we are), please sign-up at the Welcome Center.  This will be a group who meets purely for social times and fellowship.

THE FLAG IN THE GATHERING PLACE is given by Ben Summers, one of our members, who recently returned from serving in Afghanistan.  This flag was flown there during his mission in honor of our church.

LENTEN BIBLE STUDY … ANGELS POINT THE WAY TO EASTER  The study groups are now underway. We remind you to put yours on the calendar and try to make each session. The Sunday service and sermon is based on the same texts you are studying at home. We hope this unusual and creative study will give you a new perspective on the Lenten story.

STEPHEN MINISTRY …Have questions?  Need more information about Stephen Ministry? Look for a Stephen Ministry representative in the Gathering Place near the banner. This  exciting adventure in learning and doing ministry began recently for six people.  These Stephen Minister trainees have begun the task of studying, discussing, experiencing, and trying out the skills involved in sharing God’s love and compassion with those who especially need these gifts.  Let us thank God for these ministers and ask God’s continued help and blessing in their adventure. Their topic for study this week will consider the subject of talking about the importance of recognizing and accepting all of the feelings people have.

DURING LENT you will find various artistic expressions through- out the church. In the Gathering Place you may view the different crosses on the art wall. As you enter memorial hallway take notice of the beautiful display case with some historical artifacts from the season. Further down the hallway is a ledge that has been decorated with carved wooden crosses. Each has been marked with a brief explanation of its origin.

ONGOING ACTIVITIES:

MEN’S BREAKFAST.  Men, make that New Year Resolution now to have breakfast with Pine Street Men on the second Saturday of the month.  Great time of fellowship, discussion and dinning. The best way to start the weekend is by having a great breakfast with other Pine Street men.  We meet at 8 a.m. in Fellowship Hall.  Come early to assist in preparation and stay for a bit to help clean up or just for conversation.

SHAWLS AVAILABLE.  As you enter worship today you will notice that there are baskets containing shawls located in the Narthex and on the pew running along the side of the church near the Lectern where children’s bags are also located.  These are placed in the Sanctuary by the Shawl Ministry … a group of Pine Street members and friends who meet monthly to knit these garments and pray over them, dedicating them as a ministry of caring and love for those who use them.  If you are feeling a chill, take a shawl and wrap up.  If you are feeling a bit lonely, take a shawl. If you just want to feel the love of Christ given through the labor of this ministry, take a shawl.  We ask that you leave it on the pew at the end of the service.  Members of the Shawl Ministry team will collect and launder them for use another week.  Feel free to take a shawl occasionally, or every week as you enter … they are there for your comfort and to remind you of the love of Christ given through those who labor to make them.

CHURCH SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH  Children in pre-K through grade 5 begin choir at 9:30 a.m. each week in Room 106 with Mr. Clark-Jones. They continue with their lesson from 9:55 to 10:45.   Grades 6 through 12 begin the morning at 9:40 a.m. with Middle School meeting in room 103 and Senior Highs in the Boyd Building.

CHILDREN’S CHOIR meets every Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the Sunday School area.  We invite all children in pre-K through grade 5 to join with us and sing.

MANY PINE STREETERS HAVE CHOSEN TO E-TITHE.  To acknowledge your e-tithe as an act of worship during the offertory service, you may place a card in the plate as it is passed to you.  You may pick up an e-tithe card at the Deacon’s Bench.

RECYCLING.  Please note the blue recycling bins which are scattered throughout the buildings.  These are meant for paper only.  Please do not contaminate them with other trash.  Trash cans which are gray have trash liners while the blue bins do not.  This helps keep our church ‘green’ by recycling our used paper products. Your cooperation is very much appreciated.

HELP WANTED:

SUNDAY SERVERS FOR DOWNTOWN DAILY BREAD. Pine Street has traditionally served the meal at DDB on Sunday. Anyone wishing to join one of the service teams is encouraged to sign up at the Welcome Center. Remember, Downtown Daily Bread is Pine Street’s local, hands-on mission project. It is your opportunity to serve in Christ’s name personally.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED We are now looking for persons to deliver flowers from July-December 2010. They can sign up at the Welcome Center.

NEEDED:  WORSHIP ASSISTANTS … those adults, youth and children who assist in services by serving as Crucifer, Beadle or Presenter of Bread and Wine at the early service.  Each of these tasks is an opportunity to serve in leadership in our worship. We call ourselves “liturgical”.  The word liturgy is best defined as “the work of the people”.  These three means of service are ways for us to participate in worship more fully.  Adults, youth and children are invited to do their part.  We have a small, faithful core of volunteers who fill these positions each week during the program year, but we could use many, many more.  Come … your work calls!  For more information click here. Sign up at the volunteer table today!

PINE STREET’S HELPING HANDS MINISTRY is an ongoing mission opportunity for members of Pine Street Church.  Any member who needs help with minor work inside or outside their home may sign up to receive helping hands from the mission committee.  Members are required to pay for any supplies needed.  Please sign up at the Welcome Center. Any persons willing to provide the hands to complete the labor required for our members may sign up at the Welcome Center also. Contact person is Roger Olson;  email him at Housedoctr@att.net

THE Welcome Center is full of wonderful volunteer ministry opportunities for the 2009-2010 church year. Most of the volunteer needs require a minimum amount of time. For a partial list of volunteer opportunities, click here. The current list can be found at the Welcome Center located in the Gathering Place and is open for sign ups after both worship services. Stop by, sign up to volunteer, become a team member.
