Who We Are
Mission and Vision Statement
God calls us to be at the corner of Third and Pine Streets in Harrisburg to worship and build a unique community of faith. We welcome all people on any stage of their spiritual journey and encourage each other to explore joyfully and thoughtfully the power of God’s transforming love made real and visible in Jesus Christ. Every aspect of our common life is rooted in gratitude for what we have been given and we are compelled to share all that we have and are. We are called to risk all that we have for the love of Christ: going forth in service, caring for those in need, working for peace and justice, and taking the good news of God’s love into the world.
We believe that God is calling us to dream and see visions of a vibrant church engaged in vital ministry and mission. To that end, we envision a future in which Pine Street:
- Worships God through diverse expressions of worship and music.
- Practices hospitality and the nurturing of loving and caring fellowship.
- Builds disciples who are committed to a journey of faith and who reach out to others.
- Develops and nurtures the gifts of its members for service and mission.
- Extends God’s presence through our lives to our community and the world.
- Remains open to new vision and direction from God.
History
Founded in 1858, Pine Street Presbyterian Church is the second-oldest Presbyterian church in Harrisburg. A group of forty-two members, led by James McCormick, Jr., left the English Presbyterian (later Market Square) congregation over theological differences and established the Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg. They erected an elegant Gothic Revival church at Pine and Third Streets.
Through the years, leaders in all aspects of community life have contributed generously of their talents, abilities and monetary resources to support parish activities. This enduring level of individual participation has given Pine Street Presbyterian Church a prestigious voice in the community and in the denomination. For 150 years, the congregation has been committed to an emphasis on Christian education, local and foreign missionary ministries, and meaningful worship and music.
For a more in-depth account of Pine Street’s 150 year history, copies of A Birthplace and Nursery To Multitudes of Souls by local historian Susan E. Meehan, as well as a DVD are available by contacting the church office. Cost of the book is free to members and $20 for non-members. Cost of the DVD is $20.
