Scenes of the Passion and Crucifixion are depicted in the window given by John Fox Weiss and his wife, Christine Brandt Weiss. In the bottom medallion appears THE AGONY IN THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE with an angel ministering to our Lord. The central medallion depicts THE CRICIFIXION. Christ on the cross; to the left is the Roman soldier who pierced His side and Mary His mother; on the right is the soldier who gave Christ the sponge moistened with vinegar, and also John the Evangelist. Above the head of Christ on the cross are the initials, INRI, standing for the words "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." The inscription reads: HE DIED FOR THE SALVATION OF MEN. The top medallion depicts THE ASCENSION OF CHRIST, with the wounds of his death on his hands and feet. He is surrounded by eleven Apostles. Mathias not yet having been chosen to take the place of Judas. In the apex is a PELICAN-IN-HER-PIETY, a very old and interesting Christian symbol of tthe Atonement. It was believed that the pelican, during times when food was scarce, tore a hole in her breast and fed her young with her blood, thereby saving them by her own death. |
