In the central panel Stephen, who was the first martyr of the new faith, holds a book with three stones, the symbol of his martyrdom. The book of Acts describes him as a man "full of grace and power, who did great wonders and signs among the people." He debated with the Jews in their synagogues, and when they could not stand up against his wisdom, they had him stoned. Flanking him to the left is MARY OF BETHANY, holding a cooking vessel, and to the right, MARTHA, holding a bowl of fruit. The windows were designed by Wilbur Herbert Burnham.

Problems

  • Deflection (bulging) along the border glass, indicating failure of the lead.

The Restoration

  • Remove all panels and transport to the studio for Historic Restoration.
  • Insert plywood to seal the openings. It will be painted on the interior and exterior, to complement the colors of the building.
  • Remove loose paint on the outer surface of the millwork and repaint with two coats of paint.
  • Reinstall windows and cover with vented, protective glass.

Restoration Status

  • Removed for repair September, 2008
